YES! YES!! YES!!! In the State of Utah, the lash artist must have a current Cosmetology or Basic Esthetics license. It is AGAINST THE LAW to engage in the practice of applying lash extensions without a license! A copy of their license must also be displayed in their place of business.
What is the difference between a Certification and Licensure?
A certification is where a person is certified to be able to competently complete a job or task, usually by passing an examination upon completion of a training program. Certification does not designate that a person has sufficient knowledge in a subject area, only that they passed the test. Certification alone does not allow you to legally practice or work in a profession that requires a license.
Licensure means a restricted practice or a restriction on the use of an occupational title. It also involves accredited training and exams. Licensure is required to regulate an activity where incompetent execution would be a threat to the public. Practicing without a license may carry civil or criminal penalties.
If the lash extensions are not properly applied by a trained and qualified extensionist, you could possibly have lash breakage and even worse, bald spots.
Applying lash extensions is a tedious process. It takes time and dedication to perfect the techniques. Many opportunists call themselves "Lash Artists," but they lack the training and licensure. Even though this is now a regulated profession, the opportunists still take advantage and practice illegally. Trust me, I've cleaned up their mess and helped their victims regain hope for beautiful, healthy lashes.
Please do your research and protect yourself! Ask to see their State Cosmetology or Esthetics License and other certifications they may have. Ask for photos of THEIR work.
1. Remove all eye make-up with a mild cleanser that is also oil and solvent free. Clean lashes well, removing all traces of mascara and eye liner.
2. Please don’t use oil based makeup removers to clean your lashes prior to your appointment.
3. Please don’t put on any mascara or eye liner the day of your appointment. I'd rather spend time filling your lashes to purrrfection than cleaning them!
4. If you wear contact lenses, please bring your lens case so you can remove them before the application, or wear glasses.
5. Please set aside 2 to 3 hours for your full-set appointment and 1 hour for your fill. Many clients fall asleep during the procedure.
Lash extensions will stay on your natural lashes for the life of your natural lash cycle. A normal lash growth/shed cycle is 30-60 days. Most people shed natural lashes at a rate of 2-5 lashes, per day, per eye. A new lash is grown to replace the one that fell out. How you care for your lash extensions will also determine how long they will stay on. With proper care and monthly maintenance, your lash extensions can last FOREVER!
There are many opportunists that charge $75, or less, for a full set of lash extensions and $25 for fills. At the Lash Cat, Classic lashes are $169 and Volume lashes are $220. Be sure to check Specials page for promotional discounts! Monthly fills are needed to maintain full and feathery lash extensions. All fills are 60 minutes. Classic fills are $49, Volume fills are $59. If time allows, you may extend your appointment for an additional charge. You can always book an extended appointment in advance.
There is no need to wear mascara. The extensions are black and already curled to purrrfection! Using over-the-counter mascara and eye make-up removers will weaken the bond. Also, rubbing the extensions to clean the mascara off can twist and tangle them or cause them to fall off.
I strongly recommend that you avoid wearing mascara, rubbing your eyes, or pulling and picking at the extensions. DO NOT crimp or curl the extensions. Doing so can break the extension and even your natural lash.
If you need eye make-up remover, I have some that is solvent-free and available for purchase.
The first 24 hours is crucial when it comes to extending the life of your lash extensions and protecting your investment!
1. During the first 24 hours after each application, avoid getting your lashes wet. Do not swim, use steam, or wash your face with hot water.
2. Refrain from rubbing your eyes, pulling, or picking at your lashes.
3. Apply eye cream sparingly and avoid the lash line area. Creams, eye make-up removers, lotions, or cleansers containing glycols and carbonates (solvents) can loosen the bond of the lash extensions.
4. It is not necessary to use an eyelash curler. It may break the lash extensions as well as your natural lashes.
5. When washing your face, gently clean around the eyes with a wash cloth or fingers. Do not rub your eyes and lash extensions. You should avoid harsh water spray on your extensions while in the shower.
6. Don't be afraid to gently brush them out using the complimentary eyelash brush given to you at each of your appointments. It is important to change out and keep your lash brushes clean and free from dirt and bacteria that may be harmful to the health of your eyes.
This rumor was started on Instagram, by someone who was/is part of a well-known MLM cosmetic company, as a sales pitch to increase their sales of a certain Fiberlash Mascara.
Wearing eyelash extensions does not put you at higher risk for lice, nor do they attract lice. Lice are contagious and travel from host to host through direct and indirect contact, feeding on blood and skin. Although assumptions should never be made, the presence of lice on the eyelashes and eyelids can also be a manifestation of pubic louse infestation. Just because you read it on social media doesn't mean it's true!
Take preventative measures. Do not share make-up, brushes/combs, towels, hats, scarves, hair accessories, pillows, etc.
The FACT is . . .
Eye infections are common and caused by bacterial, viral, and/or fungal agents. There are many different types of eye infections, with different causes and treatments. Eye infections are spread easily from person to person (a child, spouse, or coworker, for example). To help prevent infection, wash your hands, don't touch your face and rub your eyes with dirty hands. Gently wash your face and eyelids and lashes daily. Avoid using other people's towels, make-up, linens, etc. Most important, clean your contact lenses on a daily basis!
So, lash extensions do not cause eye infections. However, a careless lash artist using dirty tools covered with bacterial, viral, and/or fungal agents can spread infections. Also, we may give ourselves infections by not maintaining personal hygiene.
The FACT is . . .
Many people think that you have to give your natural lashes a break so that they can “breathe.” This is not true. Your natural lashes are on a 30-60 day growth/shed cycle. When one falls out, another grows to replace it. Your eyelashes do not know that extensions are being applied to them. They will continue to go through the growth and shed cylce for the rest of your life. However, it is completely up to the client whether or not they wish to give their natural lashes a break.
Eyelash extensions do not affect the natural growth cycle during or after you decide to stop getting them applied. Wearing eyelash extensions has no chemical effect on the thickness, length, or the amount of natural lashes you were born with. You get used to waking up every day with long, dark, thick lashes. So, of course, you think your eyelashes are thin, sparse, and short "stubby" after the extensions have been removed. Just like it was something you got used to when you first had them applied, you will also get used to not having them on.
The FACT is...
While this may be true for drug store strip lashes, applying individual lash extensions, one by one to your natural lashes, is a detail-oriented and tedious process. It would be like a surgeon trying to perform surgery on himself. This is NOT recommended!
Applying eyelash extensions requires the use of sharp tweezers, strong adhesives, and VERY steady hands. You can cause serious damage to your lashes and eyes if you try to DIY.
Anyone that attempts to apply lash extensions on themselves has a fool for a client!
